Re-opening

After a short intermission for a deserved renovation, the famous restaurant Le Train Bleu, in Paris Gare de Lyon station  has just re-opened today.

This buffet opened during the world fair of 1900 to welcome the many visitors arriving from the south east of France  with the P.L.M railway company (Paris-Lyon-Mediterranée) as a symbol of travel, of technical innovation, of comfort and luxury. Named Buffet de la Gare and unveiled by the President of the French Republic, it is only in 1963 that it got renamed as « Le Train Bleu » (the Blue Train), honouring the legendary « Paris-Vintimille », legendary train with as its destination the Côte d’Azur.

After over 100 years, the place was in a major need of renovation.

Registered as a historical landmark since the 70’s, the overwhelming  gilted decor has been faithfully refreshed as well as the furniture.

The service now levels with the decor and the food too. Of course it’s a little pricy but a tasting menu at Le Train Bleu will be a trip through tradition and history in a genuine setting. Waiters with long white aprons, silver flatware a trip back into the Belle Epoque!

On your way to the south of France and to Provence, take some time for a nice lunch rather than experimenting the on board buffet. It is worth arriving the train station early enough!
