Vermeer exhibit at the Louvre

It has been more than 50 years since the last exhibition of Johannes Vermeer at the Louvre. Yes, already in the Louvre at the time, proving that Paris will always be Paris. For the next 2 month, until May22nd 2017, the Louvre offers a very rare chance to see 12 paintings from the Deutch painter out of the 36 works known from the Master of Delft, surrounded by the many other works that he inspired as well as the works and artists that inspired him.

To most of the world, Vermeer most famous painting is certainly the « Girl with the pearl earring » from the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague but to the French, it is another piece from the Master that any of us is familiar with: The milkmaid. A painting that has appeared on dairy products bearing the same name for the last 40 years. There is no fridge that never hosted the the milkmaid in the country! Sometimes it takes very little to bring art in your daly life!

Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, and frequently used very expensive pigments. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work and painted mostly domestic interior scenes. He was quite famous at his time but the demand was not big and he unfortunately died young leaving behind a small production. The paintings are now in various Museums throughout the world and it is here a rare opportunity to see so many of them at the same time. By the way, New-York’s Frick Collection on 5th avenue has 3 beautiful painting by the genre painter.

Of course if you miss this wonderful opportunity, the Louvre owns 2 beautiful paintings by Vermeer: the Astronome and the Lacemaker, alway on display in the museum. You can then chase all the others hoping from one city to the other, a wonderful Ariane thread to tour the globe!
